NIF scientists set the controls for nuclear fusion

Posted by Ry on Mar 31 2009 | Technology

It looks like nuclear fusion is no longer just for precocious teenagers. Among the flurry of experiments going down worldwide, significant work will start rolling at the US National Ignition Facility sometime this June. Under construction for twelve years, the lab will focus 192 giant laser beams on two forms of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium. Combining these isotopes at high temperatures generates a colossal amount of energy, recreating conditions "at the heart of the sun." The goal is to find a way to achieve controlled, sustained nuclear fusion and energy gain in a lab. According to the director of the facility, Dr. Ed Moses, "When all NIF lasers are fired at full energy, they will deliver 1.8 megajoules of ultraviolet energy to the target." Lasting just a few nanoseconds, the system is capable of generation 500 trillion watts of power -- more than the peak electrical generating power of the entire United States. Significant results are expected sometime between 2010 and 2012.

Worry Not About My Infection Because My Infection Is Great [Happiness]

Posted by Ry on Mar 31 2009 | Technology

Readers, you may have seen that I was infected with a virus this weekend. It is better now, but to say that is misleading because it was never bad so there is no better state.

You see the virus was actually quite beneficial. I did not need to worry about what it wanted because as it turned out what it wanted was the same as what I wanted. So as you can imagine, it was easiest to just allow it to retain control.

The irony of the situation is that the popups the virus created were used to sell adware software, which I dutifully purchased and paid for. But I will not install it, because to install adware software would be to say that I wanted to get rid of said adware, or malware, or spyware, or any other type of ware that I would be fortunate enough to luck upon in my internet related travels.

So now I am going to le

Digital Album: it’s a digiframe, just more capacious

Posted by Ry on Mar 31 2009 | Technology

Okay, so maybe this mysterious Digital Album really is nothing more than a relatively plain 7-inch digital photo frame, but the included 4GB of storage is certainly appreciated. If, for whatever reason, you honestly feel the need to keep more than a thousand or so shots of little Joey on there, the integrated SD card reader can help you take things up to 20GB overall. Also of note, there's a rechargeable battery that can show off slideshows for around three hours, and if you leave your AC adapter at home, you'll be thrilled to know that this one can rejuvenate via USB. It'll ship in around a fortnight in tan /silver or black / pink, and you'll be asked to pay £179 ($256) to take one home.

Cellphone-Smuggling Pigeons Are a Jailbird’s Best Friend [Cellphones]

Posted by Ry on Mar 31 2009 | Technology

Hey you jailkeepers, you know how the inmates been asking about keeping harmless little pigeons around? Well, it's a con: They're using them to smuggle in cellphones.

The AP reports that at the Danilio Pinheiro prison in Sorocaba, Brazil, inmates were raising pigeons, having them smuggled out, strapped with packs on their legs containing cellphone parts and, in one instance, an entire cell charger. The pigeons' weakness? Food. Guards were able to lure them down from the high fences, and foil the dastardly schemes of the as-yet-unknown culprits.

It's a funny story, but it's not super hilarious when you learn that the cellphones are smuggled into prisons so that the imprisoned gang leaders can carry out horrific attacks on police and public transportation, as Sao Paolo's First Capital Command gang did in 2006, killing over 200 people.

So if you see a pigeon chilling on the prison wall, shoot first, and then frisk it for cell parts. [SF Gate/AP]
