Mio stuns at CeBIT with ultra-sleek Moov V780 MID

Posted by Ry on Feb 28 2010 | Technology

Uh, folks -- we've an identity crisis on our hands. Is this a MID with a penchant for navigating? Is this a PMP with pre-loaded maps? Is it an ultra-sleek navigator that just so happens to play music? There's a fair chance the world will never know, but we'll soon be stopping by Mio's booth at CeBIT in order to get a view of things ourselves. At any rate, the Moov V780 is undoubtedly one of the most appealing things to come from the outfit in quite some time, offering up 720p multimedia playback, an HDMI output, digital TV support, a 7-inch (800 x 480 resolution) display, 600MHz CPU, 512MB of memory, 4GB of onboard flash and a pretty tremendous list of supported file formats. Sadly, it's humming along on Windows CE (rather than, say, Android), but at least it ships with WiFi and optional WiMAX. There's no mention of a price or release date, but we'll be on the hunt for those tidbits as soon as the show floor opens up.

Error: 8001050F Takes Down PlayStation Network [Playstation]

Posted by Ry on Feb 28 2010 | Technology

Something is happening in PlayStation Network land this evening, and it isn't good. Known cryptically as Error: 8001050F, all we know right now is it won't allow users to log into their accounts or play online.

According to one user over at the official PlayStation boards, the error does not prevent him from using the Internet via his PS3, but logins have become nigh impossible. Several other users chimed in after that comment to report identical problems.

Who amongst the Gizmodo population can't access PSN right now to play MAG or any of the other online games at your disposal? And, if so, what the heck are you doing instead?

For more info, hit the links or visit Kotaku for more. [IGN Boards, PlayStation Boards - Thanks, Janesh]

Apple files for Magic Trackpad trademark

Posted by Ry on Feb 28 2010 | Technology

This one slipped under our radar this week, but it's interesting nonetheless: Apple's filed for a "Magic Trackpad" trademark, which would seemingly indicate that there's a companion to the Magic Mouse in the works. That's all we know for now, but recall that John Gruber at Daring Fireball hinted that Apple was working on a "multi-touch trackpad gadget for desktop Macs" back in October just before the revised white MacBook was released. Obviously nothing's come of that yet, but it all seems to fit -- either that, or Apple's trademark attorneys are just trying to cover their bases. We'll see what happens.

PlayStation Network down, so are lots of PS3s

Posted by Ry on Feb 28 2010 | Technology

It's unclear exactly what's going on at the moment, but it appears that the PlayStation Network is down and causing a whole host of related problems for PS3 systems, including 8001050F error codes, game crashes, corrupted trophy info, and even the complete inability to launch certain titles. There's no ETA on when things will get back to normal -- looks like it's gonna be a Blu-ray kind of evening for PS3 owners out there.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Not The Worst Thing I’ve Heard: Dork Anthem

Posted by Ry on Feb 28 2010 | Cool Stuff, Interesting News

This is a song called 'The Dork Anthem' by two cats named Dave and Brian. Personally, I find the term dork offensive, but that's just me and I'm official the judge of these things. Geek, sure, but dork? That's derogatory. Like not calling me by my proper title: Geekologie Writer, The Handsome Well Endowed. Youtube Thanks to Rusco, who throws geek parties all the time and sleeps with lots of women. Unless he's married or has a girlfriend, in which case he doesn't. ;) (Your secret's safe me with me)

The Day Trader’s Paradise [Featured Workspace]

Posted by Ry on Feb 28 2010 | Uncategorized

What do you get when you have space for a custom office setup, a good amount of cash, and the vision to make it all happen? Dozens of monitors and the need for your own personal power plant.

We've been watching Steve's office since he first posted the construction pictures into the Lifehacker Workspace pool. Slowly we've watched his office take shape from a spackled room with naked monitor mounts into the jaw dropping display of computing power you see above.

Steve just finished the project and posted some pictures to update us, writing:

Originally there was to be 60 monitors, a mix of 19s and 24s however it changed a bit and there is now 40 24" monitors and another 20 monitors offsite for development.

There is six computers running all the monitors, eac computer has a core i7 975, 24 gb of DDR 3 memory, two SLC SSDs in raid 0 and a large amount of nvidia NVS 420s as well as Nvidia 9800 GTs.

This office is used for intraday trading and development.

And by "intraday trading and development" he means displaying the world's largest line chart screensaver when he isn't using it to build a better bomb and issue demands of monetary compesation to world governments—or something like that we'd imagine. Check out more pictures of his awesome setup below:

You can check out more pictures of Steve's office by visiting the various photo sets he shared during construction: Office construction, Office, and New Office Done.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, throw the pictures on your Flickr account and add it to the Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Pool. Include some details about your setup and why it works for you, and you just might see it featured on the front page of Lifehacker.
