Renault DeZir recharges while you stare, not while you wait

Posted by Ry on Jul 08 2010 | Technology

Oh, sure -- Shelby's practically nonexistent Aero EV can recharge in around 10 minutes, but if you're hoping to find a similarly quick vehicle that's even close to your price range, you've probably come up empty so far. Thankfully, Renault has a mind to change that with the new DeZir. Slated to take the stage at this year's Paris Motor Show, the lascivious concept rolls with a mid-mounted electric engine capable of screaming a solid 100 miles before petering out. The good news here, though, is that the outfit's Quick Drop technology enables the battery packs to regain 80 percent of their charge in just 20 minutes using a 400V three-phase current, though a standard household plug will require a good night's rest (read: eight hours) to rejuvenate it fully. 'Course, only time will tell if this beaut will ever hit the production line, but we'd go ahead and brace yourself for it to look far tamer should that green light ever get lit.

Ask Engadget: what’s the best graphing calculator for under $200?

Posted by Ry on Jul 08 2010 | Technology

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Brian, who just can't help but think about the dreaded back-to-school season already. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"Hello Engadget. I'm currently scouting a calculator for school. What's the best calculator to buy for around $200 dollars?"
We're going to guess this guy's majoring in poetry, but those blasted math courses that "they" make everyone take is driving this need. It's funny to think how slowly graphing calculators have evolved (and how prices have fallen at an even more lethargic pace), but there's just got to be something better out in 2010 than the tried-and-true TI-83. Right? Let the man know in comments below.

Netgear’s ReadyNAS Ultra 4 and Ultra 6 stream to TiVo, mobile, and DLNA-certified devices

Posted by Ry on Jul 08 2010 | Technology

The "Death of Local Media Storage," eh Netgear? The company is certainly proud of its latest unveiling, the ReadyNAS Ultra series, as the aforementioned press release headline exemplifies. In addition to the usual network storage capabilities, the gang can stream media to any TiVo device, DLNA-certified machine (via Skifta), and mobile devices using Orb technologies. All machines feature 1.66GHz Intel Atom CPUs, 1GB RAM, and RAID 0, 1, 5, and 6 data protection. Need a hefty do-it-all box for storage? The Ultra 4 (2 x 2TB, single-core processor) and Ultra 6 (3 x 2TB, dual-core) will start shipping in mid-July, with pre-orders available in the very near future, for a penny under $900 and $1350, respectively. And if you want the capabilities in a lighter form factor, keep an eye out for an Ultra 2 in October.

Posted by Ry on Jul 08 2010 | Technology

Sadness. With only two missions to go after the last launch, this is the latest shuttle tank ever to be manufactured. Designated E-138, it rolled out NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, to the beat of the Storyville Stompers. More »

Why Geeks Are Better At Sex, A List

Posted by Ry on Jul 08 2010 | Cool Stuff, Interesting News

geek.jpg This is a list somebody wrote allegedly explaining why geeks make superior lovers (which is 100% true). Some of the reasons I agree with, but most of it sounds like it was written by someone who's never seen a vagina before (is it true they look like baby crocodiles?!).
1. we're more curious than the rest of the population. 2. We're hackers by trade, so we are open to trying new things. 3. We produce things for ordinary users, so we're more attuned to producing an orgasm in our partner then the rest of the population. 4. We use technology to help get you in the mood even before you arrive. 5. We're more likely to mute our telephone, and turn down the volume on the computer so incoming IM's don't make a sound. We're also used to not answering the telephone, instead preferring asynchronous means of communications. 6. We watch a lot of porn, so we know a lot of positions. This means we're open to trying them all. 7. Geeks multitask. So we pleasure multiple erogenous zones in our partners... kissing, f***ing, tweaking and rubbing all at the same time. 8. We are more available. We can fix your vibrator when we're not. Other people are not gonna steal us. We're smart, and increasingly, we're rich. 9. We're sensitive to your needs. We learn this by spending way too much time with google analytics, nagios, server load times and iO rates. 10. Finally, we're geeks. Girls prefer jocks. So we will go out of our way to be special to you.
I'm pretty sure I could easily come up with a more convincing list. And I'm not just saying that because I'm probably definitely the most accomplished lover in the room, but I've never let my partner down. Sat on it a few times, sure, but never let it down. Have I, Rosie? Rosie?! Oh come on -- TAKE THE OVEN MITT OFF AND TALK TO ME! Why geeks rock at sex [askmygirlfriend] Thanks to Brandon, who's won the World's Greatest Lover contest three years running and has the novelty coffee mugs to prove it (you bought them at the beach, didn't you?).

Solar Impulse returns from 24 hour test flight 26 hours later

Posted by Ry on Jul 08 2010 | Technology

Rest easy, fans of solar-powered aeuronautics. Captain Piccard's Solar Impulse has safely returned after 26 hours in the air -- powered by nothing but the sun. The four-engine aircraft, which features 12,000 solar cells arranged on its wingspan, reached a height of almost 29,000 feet before touching down at Payerne Airport near Berne, Switzerland today. The next step? The team is going back to the woodshed, with the hope of developing a plane that will circumnavigate the globe by 2013.
